Beryl Kelsey - Crocodiles, Bombs and the ‘Body Lean and Lifted’
Beryl gave us a fascinating talk at the January meeting last year about her travels in 2006.
She will continue with more anecdotes she didn’t have time for last time and also explain the
meaning of ‘The Body, Lean and Lifted.’

Judi Murden Of BBC Radio Humberside - Pictures on the Radio
Expecting to become a teacher, it still surprises Judi to find herself in journalism. After a
variety of jobs she became a presenter in radio and TV leading to the co-ordination of the BBC
Radio Humberside’s award winning Children’s Hospice Appeal. Judi is now a broadcast journalist
with BBC Radio Humberside’s Communities Team and mentors the BBC’s School News Day project.

Julie will demonstrate Bowen Therapy and Ayuveda Massage.
These are two complementary techniques
used on the body. The result of this combination is a powerful treatment for all physical, mental
and emotional conditions.

Ken Elletson - First Aid Work and the Casualties Union
Whilst working on the dock estate, Ken became a member of the St John’s First Aid Association.
Later, he joined the Casualties Union that provides personnel for first aid training and
competition work. Ken will relate some fascinating and humorous experiences he encountered
during his time spent with these organisations including involvement in realistic ‘mock ups’
e.g. a train crash!

CHRISTINE CHURCH - Hull – A Fair Trade City
Fair Trade is about working with people in the poorest nations to enable them to live in dignity
and with hope for the future. Fair Trade works by paying reasonable wages for the work that is
performed, by respecting the needs of the individuals, by committing to long-term relationships,
and by providing credit where it is needed most.

Hugh Crosland - An Introduction to Qigong and Tai Chi
Hugh is a Remedial Massage Therapist and ‘occasional’ Tai Chi teacher. His interest in Qigong
developed through his study of Asian Martial Arts and resulted in him learning Tai Chi for a year
in 2005 whilst living in SE Asia. Millions of people in China and around the word practice Qigong and
Tai Chi for its health and health maintenance benefits.

KelvinYoung - East Yorkshire Dialect
Kelvin gave us a superb talk about his work as a part-time North Yorkshire Moors National
Park Ranger in April last year. Since then I have been keen to invite him again for another topic
dear to his heart, the unique dialect of the East Riding of Yorkshire. He has also promised to
recite some of his own dialect poems.

Lynne Dawes and Julie Waterman - Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed (or not diagnosed at all).BackCare members, Julie and Lynne,
are willing and qualified, to share their personal experiences of this misunderstood and distressing
condition. You will be made aware of the numerous symptoms that are associated with it and how they
manage the condition on a day-to-day basis.

Gill Crosland - Simple Neck and Shoulder Massage
Gill will show us how to do a very simple massage treatment to the neck and shoulders. This can be
done through the clothes, using some very easy but soothing and effective massage techniques. You
can then practice in pairs sitting down. Gill will also provide clear handouts to take home, so
that you can use your skills to benefit family and friends.

Ken Elletson - Backstage Experiences 2
This is a follow up to Ken’s talk last year about his part-time work behind the scenes at the Hull
New Theatre. I can guarantee another fascinating talk with more hilarious anecdotes, some ‘on’ as
well as ‘off’’ stage.

Alternative Aquatics
|
|
Two exercise sessions in the Hydrotherapy Pool at Frederick Holmes School on Inglemire Lane are held
on Thursday during term time. A change has been made to the times. The 5pm session will still finish
with Ai Chi. Members who come to the second session are now invited to join Ai Chi at 5.30pm, followed
by the normal exercise session that has been moved to 5.45pm and now ends at 6.15pm.

Lessons in the Alexander Technique
|
|
A technique for improving the use of the body and so relieving back pain and
other disorders.
|
|
Swimming with the Alexander Technique
|
Learn to swim without putting a strain on your neck or back. Only £10 per
course. Mondays 8pm-9pm at Frederick Holmes School Run by Optimists Swimming Club in Association with
BackCare Hull and East Riding Branch.
Lessons in the Alexander Technique, either on land or in the water can run only
if they are sufficiently supported.

General Information
The Branch was formed in 1995 and aims to offer a range of services and activities for its members.
Membership is open to anyone who support's the group's aim.
Equipment Loan Service.
'Try Before you Buy'. The Branch has a selection of wedges, rolls and
other aids which can be borrowed and tried out at home or in your car.
Members can also bring along any aids which they themselves possess so
that other people can try them out. The range of equipment for loan will
increase over time. The Branch also runs a library of books and videos
on back pain and exercise which members can borrow.
Aquacise.
Gentle therapeutic exercise to music in a hydrotherapy pool. An opportunity
to not only get some exercise but also to swim and relax. After warming
up, members do mobility, stretching and body toning exercises. There is
an opportunity to try alternative acquatics such as AI Chi, Watsu Floatsation,
Woga and swimming with the Alexander Technique. Cost £15 per school
term. Come along for a free trial session.

Walking Back to Health.
This group meets every Wednesday morning and walks about 5 to 6 miles
in the countryside around Hull. Short cuts are usually available for the
less experienced. A contribution of 50p is requested. The group is friendly
and many members enjoy a pub lunch after the walk. Starting points are
advertised in the newsletter. Read Beryl Kelsey's story
of the group being filmed for YTV.

This enthusiastic group meet once a month at the Endsleigh Convent Hall on Beverley Road. The cost is
