BackCare's Lothian BranchHydrotherapyHydrotherapy basically involves very gentle stretching exercises in the supportive environment of warm, chest-deep water, which many people find helps to improve suppleness and reduce pain.We employ a fully-qualified physiotherapist for an hour on a Tuesday evening. She has extensive experience in pain management work, and works in the water with those needing advice on appropriate exercises for their particular condition. If you are new to hydrotherapy we recommend a free consultation with the physiotherapist. First time users of the pool are given an early evening appointment with the physiotherapist. After that you will be given a slightly later appointment time for your regular use of the pool. We have to limit these popular sessions to half an hour because the pool can only take eight people at a time and also because it is not advisable to spend longer than 30 minutes in the warm heavily chlorinated water. Access to the hydrotherapy pool is easy, with grab rails and shallow steps. We cannot however take any responsibility for people who are unable to get into the pool unaided, though they may bring their own carer or assistant who will take full responsibility for helping them. There are separate men's and ladies' changing cubicles and showers. It is possible to park right outside the Physiotherapy Department. Access by bus from Morningside does however involve an 8-10 minute walk. * Sessions cost £4.00 for each half hour session, payable monthly in advance. Braidburn Special Needs School Hydrotherapy Pool Swimming Club, for BackCare Lothian Branch members:- Every Wednesday in the school term time from 5.45 pm to 6.45 pm The Swimming Club sessions have now ended for the school holidays and will resume at Braidburn School on Wednesday 3rd September 2008 and continue through to 1st July 2009, except for school holidays and mid-term holidays If you wish to try this out, just turn up between 5.45 and 6.45 and make yourself known to the lifeguard on duty at the pool who will introduce you to some of our members and show you where to go. The pool water temperature is consistently c.34 degrees C, which is ideal for relaxation, water exercise and gentle swimming. The pool is spacious and never crowded. There is a fully qualified lifeguard in attendance, and arrangements can be made for an occasional visit by a physiotherapist to advise on suitable exercises for different back problems. We provide some neck collars and swimming rings as flotation aids. There are showers and separate men's and ladies' changing rooms. Access to this pool is by stainless steel steps attached to the pool wall, or by sitting on the raised pool surround at the shallow end, and slipping into the water, which is very shallow. There is plenty of parking space at the school. Access by public transport involves an 8-10 minute walk from the nearest bus stop. * Sessions cost £3.00 and last an hour, paid in advance over the academic year which is split up in blocks of between 6 to 9 weeks to spread the cost of payment ** We normally allow people two trial sessions at either of the above pools, and if you wish to continue making use of the pools, you will need to join BackCare (details of various rates, including some concessions, on application to the Lothian Branch) | ||
