This book is one of the Family Doctor series available from local pharmacies. The subtitle for this series
is "Feel better by understanding" and the book certainly makes it as easy as possible to understand
the structure of joints, why they sometimes stop functioning properly and how to live with the results.
The author explains that arthritis refers to problems with the joints and has many forms, whereas rheumatism
does not have a specific meaning, but generally refers to aches, pains and problems with muscles.
Subsequent chapters deal with the main types of arthritis, giving general symptoms, diagnosis, treatment
(including self-help) and outlook. The format of summary points at the end of sections is very useful as are
the key points at the end of each chapter.

In addition to the usual forms of arthritis, such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis
and gout, information is given on otherforms of i4flammatory arthritis and conditions such as repetitive
strain injury and carpel tunnel syndrome.
Interestingly, bearing in mind BackCare's
banner of "Active Recovery", the key message throughout the book is the importance of exercise. An
excellent exercise programme is produced using clear diagrams and covers alljoints which might be affected
by arthritis.
Dr Worrall states quite clearly that a diagnosis of arthritis is not an inevitable prognosis of future
disability. She talks about prevention and damage limitation, medication and pain control, complementary
therapies and self help. This little book is notjust an interesting and easy read but is positive and
practical and well worth the small cost and the short time it takes to read it.BackCare
